Online voting will be open from 8 a.m. Pacific time Friday, March 26 to 8 p.m. Pacific time, Friday April 23, 2021.

Under HSA policy, candidates are entitled to contact HSA members by e-mail for the purpose of campaigning in the election.

It is an unprecedented time in our workplaces, with extraordinary challenges for members of HSABC. Our physical and mental wellbeing is being put to the test more than ever, while some issues persist, such as cost of living, wages and benefits, lack of work/life balance etc.

There is a need for greater accountability and transparency from leadership and the entire organization, so that members are fully aware how their union dues are being used and how decision are made. This continues to be met with great resistance. Endeavors to shift the culture, such as proposals to form groups representing lgbtq+ members, people with disabilities, BIPOC, etc., have also been stonewalled.

 It's time for change, and that starts with electing someone that is committed to anti-oppressive principles and human rights, democratic governance, working collaboratively with members, providing our chapters with the information and tools they need to serve their members effectively, and being open to feedback from members that bring forward issues that need to be resolved. I respectfully ask for your vote to serve as Director for Region 1 for this coming term.

Mark has an Associate Certificate in Leadership and Conflict Resolution, and has completed several other post-secondary programs. He also has experience as a human rights advocate, qualifications as an expert in board governance, and refers to himself as an Anti-Racist in Training. I am a committed and engaged leader representing your perspectives with our union.  Over the past two years as your Regional Director, I have been an attentive advocate for your interests, and conscientious in making good decisions that benefit us all.

Though a novice director, last year my peers elected me as the Secretary-Treasurer of our union, entrusting in me the oversight and diligent stewardship of our union’s finances.

I chair the Finance Committee, using a consensus and impact approach to direct our budget and align our investment holdings through a climate justice lens.  On the COP Committee, I work thoughtfully to ensure that our policies are equitable and can serve us well in a virtual world.

I chair our Climate Action Working Group, and represent our union on BC Federation of Labour’s Climate Change Working Group. This work connects us with other unions in the province, functioning as a collective to make an impact, such as sharing bargaining language that will promote climate action initiatives in our places of work.

I’ve taken a leadership role in health and safety, serving many years as a site OHS steward, an HSA representative on VIHAs JOHS Coordination Committees and the Psychological Health & Safety working group.  Last year, I was appointed by Minister Bains to the WorkSafe BC board as the Healthcare Representative.

With individual members, I have delighted in dialogue, answering your questions, bringing your ideas forward, and connecting you with one another.  Representing you fills my bucket.

I want to continue this Good Work and I respectfully ask for your vote in the upcoming Regional Director elections.
