Unions win bonus for community social service workers

Community social services workers will receive a new bonus early next year thanks to the efforts of the Community Social Services Bargaining Association of Unions (CSSBA).

The bonus is expected to equal about 1 per cent of each employees earnings in 2008. It will be based on reported income on the T4 income
tax form, issued by employers by the end of February, 2009. All employees of Community Social Services Employers Association (CSSEA)
agencies who earned income in 2008 will receive a bonus.

Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day November 6

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will observe Nov. 6 as the first annual Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day in Canada.

The union is urging everyone to mark the occasion by taking time to appreciate the contribution these workers make to strengthen communities across the country.

Pension seminars for all Plan members

The Municipal Pension Plan continues to offer pension seminars to plan members. 

Plan members have a choice of two seminars:

Your Pension, Your Future is aimed towards new and mid-career plan members.  In this seminar, the emphasis is on the value of plan membership, explaining pension benefits and helping members understand how decisions they make today can impact their future pension income.  Members will learn how to read their Member's Benefit Statement and find out ways to make the most of their future pension.

CSS health science professional wage grids finalized for 2007 - 2009

More than $1.5 million in equity funding has been used to increase pay rates for Community Social Service health science professionals. CSSBA makes proposals to distribute $3.5 million surplus bonus fund

The Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA) has negotiated a guaranteed minimum fund for Early Incentive Bonus Payments with the Community Social Service Employers' Association (CCSEA). The CSSBA also reached an agreement with CCSEA that if there was money left after distributing the Early Incentive Payments the CSSBA would determine the manner of distribution of that money.

The audit of expenditures has now been completed and there is a surplus of almost $4 million.

March is Community Social Services Awareness Month

A campaign to raise awareness of important community-based social services is getting support from municipal councils across BC.
Social services workers and in some cases, community agencies and allies, have presented resolutions to city councils asking that March be designated as Community Social Services Awareness month. To date, 17 city councils have supported the awareness month.
