Celebrating International Women’s Day – Up For Debate
Thursday March 5 and Friday March 6, 2015
HSA Head office – NEW WESTMINSTER

HSA invites women in our union to join us for two days of sharing to celebrate International Women’s Day.  HSA is providing the opportunity for members to participate in a workshop that combines attending in-house HSA training and an IWD dinner.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This year, HSA’s IWD workshop has been developed around the Up for Debate campaign, exploring the labour history of women in BC, the status of women in Canada -- what happened and where we are today. Up for Debate is a non-partisan campaign to create a national conversation on gender equality and women’s rights in the lead up to the 2015 federal election. It’s a campaign calling on all federal political parties to make meaningful commitments to change women’s lives for the better, at home and around the world.

You will learn about: 

  • Women and BC’s labour history

  • National Action Committee on the Status of Women in Canada – what happened and where we are today

  • Women’s issues and racism, including a panel of HSA members sharing their experiences

  • Up For Debate  - A campaign to create a national conversation on gender equality and women’s rights leading up to the federal election in 2015

  • CLC Domestic Violence Survey and Report

  • Women’s economic inequality – Iglika Ivanova  CCPA researcher and economist

  • How to engage HSA members in these issues

  • Leadership – other ways to be involved in HSA

  • HSA women in politics

  • Leadership development - Understanding governance and politics in HSA, using the rules of order and how to make sure your resolutions are successful

 Participants will include a diverse mix of experienced activists and new members who are interested in getting more involved.

Please note that participants are invited to attend the Vancouver and District Labour Council IWD dinner on Friday March 6th. This is always an uplifting event, with thought provoking speakers and fabulous entertainment. Members who live outside of metro Vancouver are eligible for accommodation costs to enable them to attend the dinner. We want as many people as possible to attend this, so if you invite another HSA member  HSA will buy them dinner.
