Social Justice Intervention Training - HSA Office - September 11, 2023

Date: Monday, September 11, 2023

Time: 9am - 4:30pm

Location: HSA Office – 180 East Columbia Street, New Westminster, BC

This workshop trains participants to do basic social justice interventions in the workplace to combat bullying and harassment, outside the grievance process.

It begins with an overview of social justice principles like diversity, inclusion, equity, and intersectionality; and works towards practical skills to combat oppression, by centering marginalized voices, and leveraging privilege for good. Participants will practice interrupting micro and macro aggressions. Direct collective action and individual works of solidarity can resuscitate toxic workplace cultures and make the world safer for everyone.

Facilitator Bio:

Adrienne Smith is a transgender human rights activist and social justice lawyer. Adrienne appeared at the BC Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada where they argued about the deleterious effects of mandatory minimum sentences for women, Indigenous people, and drug users. They recently argued a BC Human Rights Tribunal case which clarified employers’ obligations to use correct names and pronouns for non-binary people. As a trade union activist, they advocate for transgender inclusion in our unions and workplaces. Adrienne also works at the Catherine White Holman Wellness Clinic where they give free legal advice, take on human rights cases, and notarize name change documents for trans people.
