CoDev Canada's Multi-Union Delegation in Central America

HSA members interested in joining a CoDevelopment Canada multi-union delegation to Central America from November 2 to 11, 2026 are invited to apply for one of two $4,000 bursaries to support their participation.

This opportunity will enable participants to meet with a number of grassroots communities and labour organizations in Central America. CoDev, a Canadian organization that partners with grassroots groups in Latin America, has partnered with HSA since 1989 to support initiatives that strengthen labour rights, gender equity, and social justice. More details on specific locations will be provided at a later date.

DELEGATION OBJECTIVES

  • Gain an understanding of the socioeconomic conditions affecting working people in Central America.
  • Facilitate exchanges between delegates and grassroots community and labour organizations in Central America that partner with Canadian unions.
  • Strengthen international solidarity within delegates' unions and workplaces.

BURSARY AND EXPENSES

HSA will be providing a bursary of $4,000 each to two successful applicants.

CoDevelopment Canada estimates that the cost per delegate will be around $2,700, which will cover all lodging, in-country transportation (land and air), interpretation, translation, and delegation coordination and accompaniment.

Successful applicants may also use the bursary to pay for airfare to Central America and for other potential travel expenses, like meals per diem. The estimated cost for flights is $1,200. Please note that actual costs may vary, and the $4,000 bursary represents the maximum amount provided.

Should the total cost of the trip exceed the bursary amount of $4,000, participants will be responsible for covering any remaining expenses at their own cost.

Participants will not receive wage replacement from HSA for the time they are away, and they will need to make arrangements with their employer for their leave (November 2–11, 2026).
