JEDI Updates

JEDI Education for Stewards

In response to the findings from Discrimination in the Workplace, the JEDI team administered an analyzed a needs assessment for stewards. Summary of findings: Stewards need more material on how to help members with the technical (Labour Relations) aspects of discrimination and harassment, the failings of respect in the workplace and more practical education on how to work with members who are different from each other and in distress. The ask is for more flexible, and ongoing, learning opportunities. As well, stewards would benefit opportunities to debrief with each other and JEDI/LR on these issues on a regular basis.

Staff are working on revising existing materials alongside the Education team and will be building flexible learning opportunities through the summer to pilot in the fall.

 Bargaining Preparation

The JEDI team is reviewing all collective agreements with an equity lens looking for gaps to work with the membership in advocating for equitable and just changes in the member’s workplaces. We are beginning to strategize with members in diversity caucuses.

Bargaining Follow-Up

ISAR (Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism) Forum - This committee has been formed as per the MOU agreed upon in the last round of bargaining. The ISAR forum is aimed to advance Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism initiatives amongst the Ministry of Health, HEABC, and BC Unions. The work is anchored in the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), the implementation of In Plain Sight, the Cultural Safety and Humility Standard, and the Distinctions based approach, with a clear connection to the rights for Indigenous Peoples in collective bargaining.

DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Committee - This committee has been mandated to develop an anti-oppression, equity framework for systems and organizational transformation for the healthcare workforce on behalf of the province as part of the BC Health Human Resources (HHR) plan.

MOU on Gender Diversity – HSA LRO’s and stewards are actively trying to ensure the employers are implementing the washroom signage that was agreed upon in the last round of bargaining.

MOU on Cultural Days of Significance – there will be an announcement about the three pilot sites very soon.
