Becoming a steward

Stewards are elected at chapter meetings held annually. Once elected, stewards are provided with access to online resources and encouraged to attend a three-day steward training session held several times a year. Become a steward

Stewards are elected at chapter meetings to help members with common workplace concerns. They're allowed paid time off to do this. 

If you aren't quite ready to serve as a steward, consider talking with the current steward about how to help organize local events, reach out to new members, and keep the bulletin board updated.

Leadership Opportunities

Stewards are elected at chapter meetings to help members with common workplace concerns. 

Labour Council Delegates bring HSA issues to their local labour council, and information from other unions and the council back to their HSA chapter.

Attend the annual HSA convention as a delegate.

Constituency Liaisons meet with their MLA to discuss issues that are felt province-wide by members.

The Core Member Engagement Team is a hands-on program that teaches leadership and organizing skills.

Members are also encouraged to run for Member at Large or other governance positions. Members at large sit on one or more HSA committees. Members can also run for election as a regional director, and even run for president.

What support does HSA offer members?

  • Stewards: Peer to peer support. Identify issues, collect info and file grievances.
  • Organizing: Raid defense, new certifications and chapter development.
  • Servicing: Catch-all. Front line of support for stewards and sometimes members. HR relationship management and progression of grievances.
  • Legal: Arbitrations, legal opinions andinput/support.
  • Database and technology: Resources, tools, tracking and communication.
  • Disability Management (DM) and Enhanced Disability Management Program (EDMP): Identify what medical info is required and resources are available. Also, progression of grievances.
