All HSA health care professionals urged to respond to survey on racism and discrimination in the health care system

Health care workers throughout British Columbia are asked to share their experiences with racism and discrimination in the health-care system as part of a new survey launched by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond on Friday, July 31, 2020.

The health care workers survey asks respondents about the impact of discriminatory behaviours or actions on patients and their family members, as well as whether (and in what ways) health care workers are affected by these matters personally in the workplace. The survey is part of Addressing Racism: An Independent Investigation into Indigenous-specific Racism in B.C. Health Care, that Turpel-Lafond is leading.

HSA President Val Avery welcomes the survey, and encourages all members working in health care to respond.

"There is no place for racism in our communities. HSA welcomes this independent investigation into systemic racism in our health-care system and supports the effort of Mary Ellen Turpel- Lafond in reaching out to health-care workers so they can share their experiences and insights. We all have a responsibility and a role to play in ending racism and ensuring all British Columbians can trust in our health-care system when they need it," Avery said.
