National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2021

September 30 has historically been observed as Orange Shirt Day in recognition and remembrance of the legacy of residential schools. This year the federal government has marked this day as a statutory holiday, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. HSA invites you to reflect on your relationship on the Truths that are being shared and on your relationships to Indigenous Peoples.

Truth and Reconciliation Day, September 30, is a day for nation-wide reflection and education

This September 30th, 2021 is the first year that the federal government has declared a statutory holiday to mark Truth and Reconciliation. In past years, September 30th has been marked as Orange Shirt Day.  This date was chosen out of recognition that it was typically late September / early October that the federal government’s Indian Agents came for the children.

$15,000 of Financial Support for People Impacted by Wildfires

The following information is being shared from the Community Savings Credit Union: To help ease the burden of evacuations and loss, Community Savings Credit Union is providing up to $15,000 of financial support to help union members impacted by wildfires. Community Savings Credit Union will provide $500 in funds directly to individual union members that require assistance.

Important Survey About Health Benefits

As of 2017, health benefits for members covered by the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association (HSPBA) are operated by the Joint Health Science Benefits Trust (JHSBT), with representation appointed by HSA and the employer. The JHSBT is now conducting a survey to learn more about the members they serve, and has engaged ViewPoints Research to conduct an on line survey.

New Public Health Order to Require Vaccination for Health Care Workers in Acute Care Settings - updated September 14

BC’s Public Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced yesterday new public health orders for mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 for all employees working in acute care settings. This includes acute care health care professionals who deliver patient care in the community, including in people’s homes. HSA members working in these settings will be subject to the order, which requires COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. This follows a similar order for long-term care settings announced last month.
