Autumn HSA OH&S Steward Workshops: Basic OH&S Steward Training and Level II OH&S Steward Training

Basic OH&S Steward Training (two-day workshop)
HSA Occupational Health and Safety stewards and HSA representatives on workplace joint health and safety committees support their colleagues at work as well as required by legislation at all worksites. HSA is offering a two-day Basic OH&S Training workshop.

Basic Occupational Health and Safety Training is for OH&S Stewards, Alternates, and members of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) Committee who have not previously attended Basic OH&S Training. Workshop content includes the roles, rights, and responsibilities of OH&S stewards and JOHS representatives. Participants will learn about the role of the Workers’ Compensation Board, occupational health and safety regulations, hazard identification, incident investigation, worksite inspections, and making recommendations.

Participants must commit to attending all two consecutive days

Level II OH&S Steward Training (one-day Workshop)

This course further develops the knowledge and skills that OH&S stewards and JOHS committee representatives need to be effective occupational health and safety advocates. Participants will leave this course feeling more empowered and confident in addressing OH&S hazards and in their role as JOHS committee representatives. 

This course is offered to OH&S stewards and alternates, as well as JOHS committee representatives and alternates who have already completed HSA Basic OH&S training.

In this course, participants will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety law and policy framework, as well as collective agreement provisions that support OH&S
  • Review recent and relevant OH&S law and policy
  • Review the composition, structure, duties, and functions of JOHS committees
  • Build tools and strategies for JOHS committee effectiveness, including JOHS recommendations and incident investigations
  • Practice advocacy skills using the tools and resources explored in the course

Please note that OH&S Stewards, Alt. OH&S Stewards, Joint OHS Committee Reps, and Alt. Joint OHS Committee Reps will receive priority in registration. Lead, Assistant Lead, and General stewards will be permitted to attend if space allows.
 
Participants will receive wage replacement and pre-approved dependent care expenses in accordance with HSA policy.
