Becky Packer acclaimed as Region 1 representative on HSA Board of Directors effective April 5, 2019

Becky Packer will join the HSA Board of Directors as the representative from Region 1 (central and north Vancouver Island). Packer was acclaimed after the deadline passed with no further nominations.

Packer, who grew up in the Treaty 8 lands of the Woodland Cree Nation and now lives in unceded territory of the K'òmoks First Nation, is a physiotherapist working in long term care.

She credits participation in a Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) union course on Bullying and Harassment for her immersion and involvement into the trade union movement.

She is in her second year as a member-at-large in HSA, and works alongside other union members on Island Health’s Joint Occupational Health and Safety committees and the Violence Prevention program.  She recently participated in a series of ‘circle meetings’ to dialogue with others about their perspectives on psychological health and wellness at Island Health, and is awaiting the next stage of that project.

As a delegate to the BC Federation of Labour Convention she got a taste of active solidarity, joining with other activists in bringing national attention to the unfairness of postal workers legislated back to work.  She is involved in her community, supporting and volunteering for Coldest Night of the Year, organized by union sisters of the Comox Valley Transition Society.  She also supports the Cumberland Community Forest Society which protects land from logging by purchasing it, so that Comox Valley citizens will have enduring potable water.

Packer replaces Anne Davis, who served on the union’s Board of Directors for eight years.
