Byelection called for Region 2 Regional Director

A byelection for election of Regional Director for Region 2 (lower Vancouver Island) has been called today to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Val Avery as HSA president. Avery, who has served as HSA’s vice president since May 2009, was appointed president upon the resignation of Reid Johnson, as provided under the union’s constitution.

Nominations for Regional Director must be received by the HSA office not later than Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 5 p.m. Balloting will be completed by Wednesday, November 13, 2013.

The successful candidate will take office immediately following the election, and will serve as the Regional Director until the April 2014 HSA convention.

Directors meet, on average, every six weeks and take an active leadership role in representing the union.  They receive wage replacement for the time they spend in official meetings at their own regular rate of pay.  Part-time and casual members are reimbursed as if they were at work during the meetings they attend.

To be eligible, members must be employed in a chapter and have been a member of HSA for at least one year immediately prior to election.  Candidates must be nominated in writing by two members.

This is an excellent opportunity for members to contribute to the future direction of the union and to represent the interests of other HSA members.
