Candlelight vigil in memory of farmworkers killed in unsafe van

The B.C. Federation of Labour will hold a candlelight vigil in memory of three farmworkers who were killed in an overloaded and unsafe van in 2007.

Sarbjit Kaur Sidhu, Amarjit Bal and Sukhvinder Kaur Punia were killed on the morning of March 7, 2007 when the unsafe and overloaded labour contractor van in which they were travelling crashed on Highway 1 near Abbotsford.

Although the RCMP recommended criminal charges against the owner/operator of the van,no charges were ever laid. In December of 2009 a Coroners jury investigating the crash made 18 comprehensive
recommendations that would improve safety conditions for farmworkers.

The BC Liberal government has refused to implement all of recommendations.
