Community Social Services: Reminder to attend info meeting and cast your ballot

Strike vote meetings for all unionized workers in the sector continue next week.

In addition to local info meetings, two thousand union members from across the province participated in a telephone town hall on Tuesday.

HSA President Reid Johnson told the town hall about his background working in community social services as a family counsellor, and in community living providing vocational rehab.  ‎"I know first hand how challenging and rewarding these jobs are," he said.

"I know that you're counting on your bargaining team to achieve a fair wage increase and reasonable improvements to benefits. And tonight, we're talking about how you can help your team achieve this - about why we need you to vote YES to give the bargaining team a strong mandate."

Outstanding issues at bargaining include: wages, benefits, sick leave, reimbursable expenses and concessionary demands by the employer, including revisiting improvements gained in the last round of bargaining.

The Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA) is the multi-union bargaining committee for BC's unionized community social service workers. The CSSBA includes ten unions with a combined membership of about 15,000. HSA members are represented at the negotiating table by Jody Moore (parent support counsellor, Cameray Counselling Centre) and Sharon Geoghegan (labour relations officer).

The BCGEU is the largest union in the community social services sector. The bargaining association also includes HSA, CUPE, HEU, UFCW, and other unions.

The provincial government's Community Social Services Employers Association (CSSEA) represents 220 agencies in the sector.
