Fall occupational health and safety courses
HSA is offering Basic and Advanced OH&S courses this fall. Courses will be held at the HSA Office, 300 - 5118 Joyce St., Vancouver.
HSA BASIC OH&S COURSE
Occupational health and safety issues are very important to HSA members. OH&S Stewards have a vital role in promoting a safe work environment and helping to prevent injuries. This workshop will be participatory and discussion oriented. We urge you to bring examples from your workplace for discussion.
Priority will be given to new OH&S Stewards and to OH&S Stewards who have not previously attended HSA OH&S courses. Workshop participants will discuss:
- rights and responsibilities of safety stewards
- role of the WCB
- the occupational health and safety regulations
- accident investigation / prevention
- violence in the workplace
- musculoskeletal injuries
The dates for this two-day workshop are: September 30 and October 1 and the deadline for applications is September 6.
HSA ADVANCED OH&S COURSE
This course will involve in-depth review of specific OH&S topics. Applicants must be an OH&S Steward and have at least one of the following pre-requisites to be eligible to attend this workshop:
- HSA Basic OH&S course
- CLC OH&S course
- BC Fed OH&S course
- OHSAH Health and Safety course / OH&S Joint Committee training
Workshop participants will discuss:
- Specific topics of particular interest to HSA members such as repetitive strain injuries and chemical exposure.
- How to obtain support from the WCB Prevention Division in dealing with workplace health and safety issues.
- The administrative penalty system the WCB uses to pressure employers to deal with OH&S issues.
The provincial government's current review of the OH&S regulations.
The dates for this 2-day workshop are: November 18 and 19 and the deadline for applications is October 15.
Registration forms are available from your chief steward, or from the HSA office. Eligible OH&S Stewards should complete the registration form and return it to the HSA Office (Attention: Karin Herbert) as soon as possible and no later than the deadline for the desired course.
