Elections will be held in many HSA chapters this fall and winter to select members to fill the following HSA positions for the coming year:

  • Lead Steward
  • Assistant Lead Steward
  • General Stewards
  • Occupational Health and Safety Stewards

Stewards play a critical role in protecting the rights of HSA members and in maintaining a spirit of solidarity and confidence in our union. Becoming a steward is not only one of the greatest contributions you can make to your union, but it may be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have.

Serving as steward gives you the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of your fellow HSA members. Many stewards feel a great sense of satisfaction and pride when they are able to help another member resolve an issue with management. It’s also a great opportunity to develop new skills, knowledge, and friendships – and have an impact on the decision making and actions of your union.

The key duties of a steward are set out in the HSA constitution and can be broken down into three main areas:

  • labour relations and occupational health and safety advocacy
  • democratic representation
  • member engagement

Stewards are union representatives who offer support and advice to members. They play an essential role within HSA and the workplace by advocating for members -- including participating on joint safety committees to ensure members' safety concerns are heard, keeping members informed about union activities, and participating in the democratic processes of the union – including annual conventions where members set priorities and policies.

HSA provides training and ongoing support for members elected to these positions.

All members in good standing are invited to run for election. HSA is working towards equity and encourages people who experience marginalization (including but not limited to Indigenous Peoples, people of the global majority, women, people with disabilities, LBTQ2SIA+ and diverse faiths) to run for leadership positions within the union.
