Health care in El Salvador ... Lessons for BC: An evening with Santiago Diaz

HSAs Committee for Equality and Social Action is hosting an evening with community organizer and activist Santiago Diaz on Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.  Diaz is the coordinator of APSIES, the Salvadoran Association for Integrated Health and Social Services, which has been a southern partner of HSA for over 15 years.

APSIES was founded in 1983, and grew from a network of health committees in San Salvador. Diaz is one of the founding members of these committees. APSIES encourages community development through health care, health promotion and womens projects in El Salvador.  The programs combine the practical, such as the preparation and distribution of natural medicines, with the strategic, so that community members realize that their situation is a result of policies and choices made at the government level.  A move to increased privatization in health care has created new challenges for APSIES in recent years.
