HSA 2021 50th annual convention set for June 2-4 online; deadline for chapters to submit resolutions is Friday, March 12

HSA will hold its 50th anniversary annual convention June 2-4, 2021 on a virtual platform. This marks the union’s second online convention in as many years as efforts to end the COVID-19 pandemic continue worldwide.

At the annual convention, delegates representing members from throughout the province set goals, debate policies, and recommend actions for the union and its members to carry out for the year.

The deadline for submitting resolutions is Friday, March 12, 2021. Resolutions are only accepted through local HSA chapters, where members vote on submitting them for consideration.

HSA chapter meetings to vote on resolutions and elect delegates to convention will be held over the next several weeks, and all members are encouraged to propose resolutions, run for election as a delegate representing their chapter, and participate in the democratic process of setting the union’s course. Resolutions are also proposed by the union’s board of directors.

The 2021 convention will also feature an election for the union’s president, who is elected for a two-year term by delegates to convention in odd-numbered years.

Members who have specific issues that they want to raise at convention are encouraged to attend their local chapter meeting. Resolutions must be voted on and approved by members of the local chapter before they are submitted to the union’s Resolutions Committee, which includes member representation from each of HSA’s 10 regions. Resolutions forwarded to convention will be available on the HSA website in early May for members to review.

The deadline for receipt of resolutions in the HSA office is midnight on Friday, March 12, 2021. Late resolutions will not be accepted.

Please note that proposed changes to collective agreements are dealt with at Bargaining Proposal Conferences, held before the expiry of HSA collective agreements. Resolutions deemed to be bargaining proposals are not accepted.

Convention forms the basis of the union's decision-making process. Each individual member has an important role to play in determining HSA's objectives and goals for the next year. Please attend your chapter meeting and participate in this vital part of the union's democratic process.
