Basic Steward Training
Stewards play a vital role in the union. Particularly important is the steward's role in contract interpretation, organizing and the grievance procedure. In recognition of the need for educating new stewards in these areas, HSA is offering 3-day Basic Steward Training workshops at the HSA office as follows:
Dates for training in New Westminster - HSA Head Office
October 23-25, 2017 Basic Steward
Location:
HSA Office, 180 East Columbia Street, New Westminster
The focus of these training sessions is for new, inexperienced HSA chief, assistant or general stewards who have not attended Basic Steward Training in the past. The workshop will familiarize new stewards with the structure of HSA and promote skills to enable stewards to function confidently in their role. Workshop content includes:
- how HSA works as a union
- role of the steward
- advocacy skills
- leadership skills
- contract interpretation
- grievance handling
OH&S Steward Training
OH&S Steward Training is offered as a two day Basic Steward Training followed by a one day JOSH Committee Effectiveness put on by the BCFL Health and Safety Centre. New Stewards are encouraged to register for all three days. Experienced OH&S Stewards are welcome to register for the one day course.
OH&S Steward Training–Basic
Workshop participants will discuss:
- rights and responsibilities of safety stewards
- role of the Workers’ Compensation Board
- occupational health and safety regulations, policies and guidelines
- incident investigations
- worksite inspections
- role of a steward/worker rep on the joint occupational health & safety committee
- violence in the workplace
- musculoskeletal injuries
- harassment & bullying as workplace hazards
Joint Health and Safety Committee Effectiveness
We’ve heard from many Joint OH&S Committee members about their successes and their challenges. This course has been designed to allow participants to develop the tools, resources and strategies to build on their successes and to tackle the tough OH&S issues at their workplaces. In this course participants will:
- Identify barriers facing Joint OH&S Committees and develop practical strategies and solutions to deal with them.
- Learn how to generate support for dealing with the barriers preventing the solution of health and safety hazards.
- Learn how to strategize alternative and creative approaches for making changes to improve health and safety.
Audience: OH&S Committee Members, Managers, Worker Representatives and Supervisors.
Prerequisite: Completion of HSA OH&S Basic Steward Training is required before taking this course.
This course is presented in partnership with the BC Federation of Labour Health and Safety Centre.
