HSA Members Elect Sarah Kooner President
HSA members across the province have elected Sarah Kooner, an infant development consultant at Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, to serve as HSA’s next president.
“I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust that you have placed in me,” said Kooner. “Throughout my time with HSA I have had the privilege of working alongside many of you and today I stand before you with a renewed excitement to serve and lead our union with integrity, transparency and dedication.”
“I would like to thank our outgoing president Kane Tse for his accomplishments and true dedication he has shown in this role,” added Kooner. “Kane, your efforts have laid a strong foundation, and I’m excited to build on the progress you have made.”
“I would also like to extend my gratitude to the other candidates who put their names forward to stand up for our members’ rights: Don, Kevin and Matt. Your passion and commitment to our union have been inspiring and I look forward to working together to achieve our shared goals.”
An HSA member for 10 years, Kooner has served her colleagues as a steward, lead steward, member-at-large, and regional director. She has also been active on the political action, governance and policy, elections, and resolutions committees.
Other candidates in this election were:
- Don Mabon
- Kevin Towhey
- Kane Tse
- Matt Wenman
The online vote was the first allowing all HSA members to vote for the position of president. While regional directors have long been elected by a vote of all members in their region, the position of president has until now been elected by delegates to HSA’s convention.
Elected for a two-year term, the president is HSA’s senior elected officer, and oversees the union’s day-to-day operations, including staffing and budget management. The president is the union’s primary spokesperson and ensures that the policies and decisions of annual conventions and the board of directors are carried out.
