Reed College campus, Portland, Oregon
Fighting for a Fair Future
The Summer Institute for Union Women (SIUW) is a 4-day residential school designed to empower women as leaders in the labour movement through participatory education and community-building. See the University of Oregon website for more details.
The Western Regional Summer Institute for Union Women (SIUW) offers an intensive week of learning within a supportive environment in which union women can develop their skills as workers, activists and leaders. Co-sponsored by the Washington State Labour Education and Research Centre, the Institute will be held at Reed College campus in Portland, Oregon.
The Summer Institute for Union Women celebrates the solidarity of union women across boundaries of age, race, and nation and brings us together for skill building, education, and fun. Rank-and-file members, staff members, and officers from across the West will gather to share strategies, information, experience, and skills.
Highlights of the week include in-depth classes to hone skills and deepen knowledge. Workshops and plenary sessions examine current issues, ranging from politics, to health care, to international solidarity. Cultural events and workshops add richness to the Institute and inspire us to creativity in our union work.
HSA provides scholarships for members interested in participating in the 4-day institute. Scholarships include registration fees, transportation, accommodation (shared), dependent care and wage replacement. Please note if you would prefer single accommodations you would be required to reimburse HSA for $150 US dollars for the event (not $150/night as stated in the registration.)
In addition, HSA supports the participation of daughters of HSA members by sponsoring a scholarship to attend the Summer Institute for Union Women. If your daughter is interested please complete the on-line registration called 2015 Summer Institute for Union Women (Daughters) on her behalf.
