HSA Racial Justice Committee Formed
Health Sciences Association is pleased to announce the formation of HSA’s first-ever Racial Justice Committee. The purpose of the Racial Justice Committee is to advance racial justice by addressing racism within health care and social services workplaces with a focus on addressing systemic issues. This work is a critical step in taking action on HSA’s principles in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion values.
The terms of reference for the committee can be found on the HSA website: GOV 270 ToR Racial Justice Committee Dec 2022[75].pdf (hsabc.org)
A call went out on January 4, 2023, inviting HSA members to send an expression of interest to be a part of the committee. The union received many excellent applications and HSA would like to express gratitude to all those who applied. Expressions of interest were thoughtfully reviewed by the Racial Justice Working Group members: Anita Bardal, Lisa-Navine Dodd, Jing-Yi Ng, and Kane Tse.
The 2023 Racial Justice Committee will be composed of six members, including HSA President (ex-officio) and a Board member. Below are the names of the members selected for the 2023 Racial Justice Committee and their regions:
- Rachel Walls (Region 1)
- Tammam el-Khodor (Region 4)
- Natashia Lee (Region 5)
- Maha Elashi (Region 6)
- Kane Tse – (ex-officio, President)
- Jing-Yi Ng – (Board member)
HSA staff support will be provided by Simran Ahmed, HSA’s Anti-Racism Lead. HSA looks forward to working alongside the committee members as they set out on this path of fostering racial justice, equity, and inclusion within our union.
