HSPBA bargaining update: Initial monetary offer falls short

The employer has responded to your bargaining committee’s proposal for a reasonable pay increase. Their initial offer is disappointing.

Members have identified a pay increase, concrete action on shortages, workload, classification improvements, and cost of living as the most important issues in this round of negotiations. These were the leading concerns in more than 1300 bargaining proposals submitted by members last year, and in the two member surveys taken in May and in October. Your bargaining committee has taken these priorities forward at the negotiating table and backing them up with specific stories and examples of the situation on the front line – real stories about the impact of shortages, workload, and cost of living concerns as provided by thousands of members responding to the October survey.

Given what we are seeing at other negotiating tables, the employer’s offer is simply not respectful of the work done by health science professionals in BC. Eight months into negotiations, it is entirely insufficient.

Your bargaining committee will continue their efforts, but it is increasingly clear that all members will need to stick together and speak with a unified voice to achieve the gains we need.

Thousands of members have been showing their support by attending over 80 job site meetings, online information meetings, and job action education sessions held since the beginning of October. More meetings are in the works, and all members are urged to participate.
