Social Justice Day Workshop 2025 Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace: Mental Health and the CSA Standard

HSA has successfully negotiated psychological health and safety language for each of its public health collective agreements. Employers are now required to cooperate in the promotion of psychologically healthy and safe working conditions and practices, using the guidance of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Psychological Health and Safety Standard.

This workshop provides participants with tools to create strategies that will support workers with mental health issues, individually and collectively. Participants will learn how to develop workplace Psychological Health and Safety Management Systems to identify psychological hazards, create reporting and investigation processes, and implement plans to control risk.

In this workshop, participants will:

• Learn about the signs of a psychologically unsafe workplace,
• Identify organizational factors that impact mental health,
• Learn how to apply the CSA standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the workplace as an effective strategy to create a workplace environment supportive of mental health, and
• Learn about other resources available to workplaces.

This workshop is open to all HSA members, and registration priority is given to those who have not taken an HSA elective workshop in the last three years.

Members must be able to attend the entire day. As per HSA policy, dependent care costs and wage replacement will be provided. Participants must request time off from their employer once the union confirms workshop acceptance. If the workshop is on a scheduled workday, wage replacement will be provided. If the workshop is on a day off, participants are entitled to bank the time as paid union leave to be taken at a later date.
