Basic Steward Training Workshop
Basic Steward Training (three-day workshop)
Stewards play a vital role in the union. This workshop will teach new stewards the skills to serve confidently in your role. Workshop content includes the role of the steward, organizing your chapter, JEDI resources, grievance handling, and basic contract interpretation.
Participants must commit to attending all three consecutive days for either workshop:
Dates: January 26-28, 2026 or February 23-25, 2026
Location: Virtual via Zoom
Time: 9am - 4:30pm PST
Basic Steward Training is for Lead Stewards, Assistant Lead Stewards, and General Stewards. You must be an elected steward to register. This workshop is the prerequisite for all subsequent steward training.
Facing Management: A Contract Interpretation Workshop
Facing Management (one-day workshop)
This is a new HSA steward training workshop. The original ‘Facing Management’ was offered in September and November 2023 and October 2024 and has been renamed ‘Stage Two Meetings.’ If you took that class, we have updated your workshop records, and you are encouraged to apply to this workshop.
This one-day workshop for stewards will:
- Explore the collective agreement articles and legislation that empower members and stewards.
- Identify the employer’s obligation and limitations when interacting with stewards.
- Review various ways that stewards face management (e.g. Labour Management committee)
This workshop is open to all stewards who have taken the prerequisite training (see below).
Date: Tuesday January 20, 2026
Time: 9am - 4:30pm PST
Location: Virtual via Zoom
Prerequisite: HSA’s Basic Steward Training workshop
Registration Information:
Stewards interested in attending these workshops must complete a registration application by logging into My Events Registration using the provided prompts. Workshops are listed under Education events. Please call the HSA office at 604-517-0994 or 1-800-663-20170 if you do not know your HSA member ID number.
Participants must be able to attend the full workshop. If you are unable to attend the entire workshop, please review our workshop schedule to find an event where you can participate to the fullest.
As per HSA policy, dependent care costs and wage replacement will be provided. Participants must request time off from their employer once the union confirms workshop acceptance. If the workshop is on a scheduled workday, wage replacement will be provided. If the workshop is on a day off, participants are entitled to bank the time as paid union leave to be taken at a later date.
