Upcoming HSA Steward Workshops: Basic Steward Training and Basic OH&S Steward Training Winter 2023

Basic Steward Training (three-day workshop)
Stewards play a vital role in the union. This workshop will teach new stewards the skills to enable them to serve confidently in their role. Workshop content includes the role of the steward, organizing your chapter, grievance handling, and basic contract interpretation.

Participants must commit to attending all three consecutive days as follows:

January 30, January 31, & February 1, 2023 – Virtual
February 27, February 28, & March 1, 2023 – Virtual

April 3, 4, & 5, 2023 – HSA Office, 180 East Columbia Street, New Westminster

Time: 9am - 4:30pm

Basic Steward Training is for Lead Stewards, Assistant Lead Stewards, and General Stewards who have not previously attended Basic Steward Training. You must be an elected steward to register.

Virtual Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Steward Training

(two-day workshop)
OH&S stewards and HSA representatives on workplace Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) committees support their colleagues at work. By law, every worksite must have worker representatives on JOHS committees. This workshop explores the roles, rights, and responsibilities of OH&S stewards and JOHS representatives. Participants will learn about the role of the WorkSafeBC, OH&S regulations, hazard identification, incident investigations, worksite inspections, and making recommendations.

HSA is offering a virtual two-day Basic OH&S Training workshop. Participants must commit to attending both days:

February 13 & 14, 2023 - Virtual
Time: 9am - 4:30pm

This workshop is for OH&S Stewards, Alternates OH&S Stewards, and members of JOHS committees who have not previously attended Basic OH&S training. You must be elected as a steward or JOHS committee member to register. This workshop is a prerequisite for advanced OH&S training with HSA.

If you have attended OH&S training through your employer, the union encourages you to also take HSA’s OH&S training. You are entitled to attend both union and employer OH&S training.

Participants will receive wage replacement, accommodations, travel, and dependent care expenses in accordance with HSA policy.
