TIME: 9 am – 4:30pm
Location: Virtually, via WebEx. Details to follow
The Committee on Equality and Social Action invite you to participate in a virtual day of education and training to learn more about the movement to defund the police and its role in broader social justice organizing. Participants can expect an interactive session, including breakout discussion groups and an opportunity to hear from people with lived experience and expertise.
The agenda for this day-long session will include an opening keynote by artist & activist Tonye Aganaba, member of Black Lives Matter-Vancouver and the Defund604 network. Meenakshi Mannoe, criminalization & policing campaigner at Pivot Legal Society (and the Defund604 network), will provide a presentation that includes information about efforts to defund the police in the lower mainland, including advocacy directed at the municipal and provincial government. Participants will be invited to workshop scenarios that relate to criminalization and share their expertise and perspective. The session will end with a panel of speakers who will speak to the harms of policing and criminalization, and their vision for a future that centres inclusion and peer-led support.
