Vote for HSA member nominated for YWCA Women of Distinction Award

Long-time HSA activist Rachel Tutte has been nominated for a Women of Distinction Award in the Metro Vancouver YWCAs 2012 awards competition.  Recognized nationally as one of Canadas most prestigious awards for women, the Women of Distinction Awards honour women whose outstanding achievements contribute to the well-being and future of our community.

Rachel has held several HSA positions, including serving 2 terms as Region 6 Director.  She has also been active for many years in the broader labour and peace movements.  In her current role as co-chair of the BC Health Coalition, Rachel has been a passionate and tireless advocate for public health care.

Nancy Hay, an HSA member at St. Pauls Hospital, submitted Rachels nomination after the two of them agreed it would be an excellent way to promote the work of the BC Health Coalition.

Rachel has been nominated in the -Non-Profit & Public Service" category, which is adjudicated by a panel, and is also running in the -Connecting the Community" category.  This category is chosen by members of the public voting online from Thursday April 19 until noon on Tuesday May 22.  You may vote once every 24 hours per computer at ywcavan.org/content/Connecting_the_Community_Award/1147.

The nominee with the most votes receives the Connecting the Community Award and a $10,000 donation to the YWCA program area of her choice.  Rachel has chosen -Safe and affordable housing" from the 5 program areas, as it relates to an important social determinant of health.

-Im asking members to vote, but also to reach out to their networks by e-mail, Facebook and Twitter, to encourage them to vote and to go to the BC Health Coalition website to see the incredible work this organization is doing to protect and improve public health care", says Rachel.  The BCHC website is at www.bchealthcoalition.ca/
