HSA urges government to withdraw gag legislation

HSA has joined a number of other B.C. public-sector unions in their call on the Liberal government to withdraw legislation that severely restricts public-interest advertising and communication in the five months leading up to the May 2009 provincial election. Bill 42, the Election Amendment Act, would eliminate the kind of information campaigns about service cuts launched by the labour movement  in the lead up to the 2005 provincial election.

Health professionals seek action on national HR shortages

Ottawa (8 May 2008) ... Representatives of the Canadian Health Professionals Secretariat (CHPS) gathered in Ottawa recently to assess public policy and labour relations developments over the last six months and to map the course ahead for Canadas health professionals. Among the issues covered during the May 1-2 meeting was an overriding concern about the significant and growing shortage of health professionals across the country and the need for a long-term national health human resources strategy.

BC Federation of Labour to hold conference for young workers

The B.C. Federation of Labour is pleased to announce its Young Workers Conference May 30 and June 1 at Camp Jubilee. The conference is open to new and experienced young worker activists and is part of an action plan developed to encourage participation in the labour movement. The B.C. CSSBA makes proposals to distribute $3.5 million surplus bonus fund

The Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA) has negotiated a guaranteed minimum fund for Early Incentive Bonus Payments with the Community Social Service Employers' Association (CCSEA). The CSSBA also reached an agreement with CCSEA that if there was money left after distributing the Early Incentive Payments the CSSBA would determine the manner of distribution of that money. The audit of expenditures has now been completed and there is a surplus of almost $4 million.

HSA Board of Directors elects vice president, secretary-treasurer

Suzanne Bennett, regional director for HSA Region 1, has been elected by the HSA Board of Directors to serve as the unions vice-president.  The vice-president assumes the duties of the president at the presidents request or in the presidents absence and chairs the unions resolutions committee. This is her second term as vice-president.

HSA Office) HSA members who work in a supervisory role will have the opportunity to attend a one-day workshop in either Kelowna, Prince George, or in Vancouver at the HSA office.
