Labour Day rally to support locked-out and striking workers

 BL10067 Labour Day is not just another holiday, and HSA is encouraging all members to remember the struggles of working people before us that have helped achieve things like the 40-hour work week, minimum wage, and protection from occupational hazards this weekend. In the Lower Mainland, the BC Federation of Labour is holding a Labour Day rally in support of locked-out Telus and CBC and striking Teck-Cominco workers, to be held Monday, Sept. 5 at 12 noon across from the Telus Building at the corner of Kingsway and Boundary in Burnaby.

BL10062 The HSA Committee for Equality and Social Action (CESA) is urging all HSA members to participate in this years Pride Parade on Sunday, July 31st in Vancouver's West End. This years theme is No Turning Back. The Pride Parade is an annual celebration for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and their friends and allies. The Multi-Union Pride Committee will meet at 11:00 am in the 1700 block of Alberni Street. The parade begins on Barclay (East of Denman) at noon, ending with a festival from 2-6 at Sunset Beach.

NBA collective agreements soon available for members

BL10061 The provincial agreement between the Nurses Bargaining Association (NBA) and the Health Employers Association of BC effective April 1, 2004 - March 31, 2006 has been printed and should reach employers by July 18, 2005. Employers are responsible for ensuring all members working under the contract receive a copy. If you do not receive a copy of the contract, you may request one through the human resources department or contact at your workplace.

  BL10060 All funds remaining in the Education Leave Fund have been allocated, and no further applications are being accepted. All applicants to date will receive written confirmation regarding whether or not their application was successful. Applications were approved according to established criteria and granted according to the date received, subject to sufficient funds remaining.

Labour Relations Board allows appeal to be heard on union membership for BMETs

BL10059 The Labour Relations Board has granted the Hospital Employees Union leave to appeal the boards decision to allow Biomedical Engineering Technologists to be represented by HSA. Submissions must be received by June 30. Meanwhile, arbitrator Judi Korbin has been selected to hear arguments August 2 and 3 on appropriate wage rates and other classification issues for the BMETs. At issue are entry-level wage rates, classification of supervisory positions, and opportunities for recognition of work over and above the entry level.
