Reminder: February 28, 2011 deadline for HSA Scholarships and Bursaries

HSA is offering scholarships and bursaries to all members and their children.  We will be awarding ten scholarships for full-time studies, twenty bursaries for full-time studies, four bursaries for part-time studies and two aboriginal scholarships. Election to be held for Region 5 Director

February 1, 2011
During the next several weeks, HSA members in Region 5 will have an opportunity to elect their representative on HSAs Board of Directors. Nominations for the position closed on January 27th with two members declaring their candidacy: â€¢ Ramzan Anjum, a Medical Laboratory Technologist at BC Childrens Hospital in Vancouver; and • Kimball Finigan, a Radiation Therapist at the Vancouver Cancer Centre (BCCA).

Election to be held for Region 7 Director

February 1, 2011
During the next several weeks, HSA members in Region 7 will have an opportunity to elect their representative on HSAs Board of Directors. Nominations for the position closed on January 27th with two members declaring their candidacy: â€¢ Marg Beddis, a Dietitian at Surrey Memorial  Hospital; and • Brent Jeklin, a Medical Radiation Technologist at Langley Memorial Hospital.

Election to be held for Region 9 Director

February 1, 2011
During the next several weeks, HSA members in Region 9 will have an opportunity to elect their representative on HSAs Board of Directors. Nominations for the position closed on January 27th with two members declaring their candidacy: â€¢ Janice Morrison, a Physiotherapist at Kootenay Lake  Hospital in Nelson; and • Jackie Spain, a Medical Laboratory Technologist at Golden & District General Hospital.

Anne Davis acclaimed as new Region 1 Director

HSA members in Region 1 have elected Anne Davis as their new representative to the HSA Board of Directors.  Anne was acclaimed after the January 27th deadline passed with no further nominations.  Former Region 1 Director, Suzanne Bennett, did not seek re-election.

Bruce MacDonald acclaimed as Region 3 Director

February 1, 2011
HSA members in Region 3 have once again elected Bruce MacDonald as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. He was acclaimed after the January 27th deadline passed with no further nominations.  Bruce is a social worker at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. He has been a member of HSA since 2000. 

Conference call January 31 for HSA members working in health information management

HSA members working throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley received notice Jan 10, 2011 of a region-wide plan to consolidate health information management services in the Lower Mainland. Important meetings to discuss how the consolidation plan may affect the jobs of HSA members working in health information management were held this week. Members who did not have an opportunity to participate in any of the meetings are invited to joing a conference call on Monday January 31 as follows:

UPDATE: Community social services: Urgent bargaining meetings

Negotiations with community social service employers broke off in December. At this time of uncertainty, job cuts, and layoffs, employment security demands are the best opportunity we have to protect jobs and vital public community services. Yet employers are asking for concessions at the bargaining table and refuse to discuss employment security or improvements to your working conditions. There is no money for wages or benefits improvements. Your bargaining committee urgently needs to hear members' thoughts about possible options and next steps.
