Audit reveals surplus ‘bonus money for members in community social services

An audit has shown there is money remaining in the Early Incentive Bonus fund, negotiated by the Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA). This fund is a unique feature that applies only to the community social services sectoral agreements.  The CSSBA has the authority to determine what to do with this surplus. 

HSA members return Joan Magee as Region 8 Director

Joan Magee, a laboratory technologist at Cariboo Memorial Hospital, has been acclaimed as the Region 8 representative on the HSA Board of Directors after the February 7th deadline passed with no further nominations. Joan is a charter member of HSA and has served as a chief steward at Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake since 1996. As a Member-At-Large for Region 10, she served on the unions Education and Resolutions Committees.  She currently serves on the unions Occupational Health & Safety and Equality & Social Action Committees.

Three candidates running for Regional Director in Region 2

During the next several weeks, HSA members in Region 2 will have an opportunity to elect a new representative on the HSA Board of Directors.  Current Region 2 Director, Brian Isberg, announced last year that he would not be seeking re-election. Nominations for the position closed on February 7th with three members declaring their candidacy: Val Avery, a physiotherapist at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Derrick Hoyt, a pathologists assistant at Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Anna Morton, a social worker at the Queen Alexandra Centre for Childrens Health.

HSA members return Agnes Jackman as Region 4 Director

Agnes Jackman, a physiotherapist at George Pearson Rehabilitation Centre, has been acclaimed as the Region 4 representative on the HSA Board of Directors after the February 7th deadline passed with no further nominations. Agnes has been an HSA member since 1973, when she started working as a physical therapist at Vancouver General Hospital. She was active in her professional association from 1977 to 1992 and has served as a union steward at the George Pearson Centre since the late 1990s. 

HSA members return Rachel Tutte as Region 6 Director

Rachel Tutte, a physiotherapist at Holy Family Hospital has been acclaimed as the Region 6 representative on the HSA Board of Directors after the February 7th deadline passed with no further nominations. Rachel has been a member of HSA since 1986 when she started work at St. Marys Hospital in New Westminster. She soon became active in the union as a steward.  Rachel currently serves on HSAs Education, Political Action and Resolutions Committees, and is an active constituency liaison.

Nominations for the position closed on February 7th with two members declaring their candidacy: Mandi Ayers, a Medical Laboratory Technologist at Bulkley Valley District Hospital and Heather Sapergia, also a Medical Laboratory Technologist, at Prince George Regional Hospital.

Workshop Reminder

There is still room available in the two-day OH&S Steward Training workshop on March 10 & 11, 2008.  Please register as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this workshop. OH&S Steward Training:  March 10 & 11, 2008 Eligible stewards should print a pre-registration form off the HSA website (go to 'Member Services', then 'Education') and return it to the HSA Office (Attention:  Karin Herbert) as soon as possible.  HSA will call you to confirm your registration.

BC Health Coalition calls on citizens to report health care violations through new national website

Today the BC Health Coalition is supporting Canadas nurses and hospital workers, which have teamed up to launch the -Know your Medicare Rights" campaign.  The campaign will focus on providing citizens with an opportunity to report incidences of extra-billing and other violations of the Canada Health Act through a new national website.

National Union responds to new Health Council report
