$10 now rallying cry for improved minimum wage

B.C.'s lowest paid workers need your help. The B.C. Federation of Labour is campaigning to boost the provincial minimum wage to $10 an hour and eliminate the $6 training rate for new workers. The Campbell government has frozen the minimum at $8 since 2001. Six years without a raise is too long.   Thats why the BCFed is calling for an immediate increase to $10 NOW, so that our lowest paid workers get a long-overdue pay increase. Canadian Labour calls on governments to mark April 28 National Day of Mourning with stepped-up enforcement of health and safety laws

The Canadian Labour Congress is marking this years National Day of Mourning with a renewed call for governments to step-up enforcement of federal, provincial and territorial health and safety laws. Next Saturday, April 28, the labour movement will acknowledge and honour those men and women who died or were injured on the job over the past year due to workplace accidents or occupational diseases.

Fraser Health removes key information about Surrey Hospital P3 decision from documents

The public is still in the dark about why the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) is using a public-private partnership (P3) for the financing, construction and operation of the Surrey Ambulatory Care Facility despite initially opposing this approach. Key information related to the decision was deleted from 35 pages of heavily censored documents released to the BC Health Coalition under freedom of information legislation.

HSA seeks Region 5 representative on unions board of directors

HSA is calling for nominations for the position of Regional Director for Region 5 following the election of Reid Johnson as HSA President at the 36th annual convention held this past weekend.  Johnson was first elected as Region 5 Director in 1997 and was re-elected for another term this spring.  The new Region 5 Director will serve the remainder of the two-year term which ends at the conclusion of HSAs 2009 annual convention.

HSAs Committee for Equality and Social Action is hosting an evening with community organizer and activist Santiago Diaz on Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.  Diaz is the coordinator of APSIES, the Salvadoran Association for Integrated Health and Social Services, which has been a southern partner of HSA for over 15 years.
