HSA members will soon be preparing for the 2013 HSA Convention, to be held April 18 - 20, 2013 at the Fairmont Hotel (Vancouver Hotel) in Vancouver. Annual convention is the union's annual meeting where chapter representatives from around the province determine the union's future direction. Policies, actions, constitutional amendments, and structural changes are all discussed and debated at convention.

North Island community workers striking in Campbell River and Courtenay on Monday

For immediate release:  December 7, 2012  Caring professionals from not-for-profit agencies that support vulnerable families on the North Island will be on strike Monday, December 10. Community workers want to send a clear message to the B.C. government: stop putting vulnerable families last! Since 2004, the B.C. Liberal government has cut $300 million in funding for programs that support vulnerable families, the developmentally disabled, at-risk youth, and children and infants in community-based programs across the province.

Community Health Services and Support: New bargaining dates scheduled

Community Health bargaining is scheduled to resume January 7, 2013.   When bargaining resumes in the new year, the bargaining committee is looking for the employer to bring a solid offer to the table that meets the needs of the Community Bargaining Association The CBA represents more than 14,000 members, the majority of whom are represented by the BCGEU. Other unions at the table are HSA, UFCW, HEU, CUPE, USWA, and CLAC.

Community social services: Vancouver Island job action next week, none over holidays

There will be no Community Social Services job action between December 17, 2012 and January 6, 2013. Details will be announced shortly regarding next weeks strike action (Dec 10-14) on Vancouver Island. As always, workers will be contacted directly if your agency or workplace is a target for job action.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities: inclusion for all

On December 3, the world recognizes International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is calling on all levels of government in Canada to make full participation in society for people with disabilities a policy priority. People with disabilities already make a considerable contribution to our society but they could do so much more if the barriers to their participation are removed.

Health science professionals delay job action by one day ... pharmacists to be reduced Thursday, Dec. 6

In order to demonstrate support for continued bargaining, the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association has delayed plans for rotating strikes by one day. Instead of reducing pharmacy services to essential service levels Wednesday, the job action will commence Thursday, December 6 at 9 a.m. and continue until midnight Thursday.

HSA negotiates elimination of punitive aspects of BCs policy on mandatory flu vaccinations

On the eve of the implementation of a new province-wide policy that threatened to fire health science professionals who refused to declare whether they had been vaccinated against seasonal flu, Health Sciences Association  has negotiated an agreement that sees the government back off on the policys punitive aspects.
