BCNU raid of Mission Memorial fails

December 3, 2014
With time running down for the raid season, BCNU has lost another attempt to take registered psychiatric nurses out of HSA. The BCNU had tried to move members at Mission Memorial Hospital out of HSA but the Labour Board today confirmed they did not have the support of the RPNs as the vote was in favour of HSA. Earlier this year an application for Overlander Residential Care was dismissed before a vote was held due to a lack of support for BCNU.

2015 Basic Steward Training and Basic OH&S Steward Training

Stewards play a vital role in the union. Particularly important is the steward's role in contract interpretation, organizing and the grievance procedure. In recognition of the need for educating new stewards in these areas, HSA is offering four 3-day Basic Steward Training workshops at the HSA office as follows - Dates:January 19 – 21, 2015February 2 – 4, 2015February 16 – 18, 2015March 23 – 25, 2015 Location: HSA Office, 180 East Columbia Street, New Westminster

Scholarships and bursaries available for HSA members and their families

HSA is offering scholarships and bursaries to all members and their children.  Ten scholarships will be awarded for full-time studies, twenty bursaries for full-time studies and four bursaries for part-time studies.  Two aboriginal scholarships will be awarded to aboriginal students in BC.

November 6: a day for recognizing the challenges community social service workers face

November 6, 2014
Violence in the workplace, workload, health and safety issues are just a few major challenges community social service workers face. Since 2008, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has recognized November 6 as Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day. Now two provinces and over 125 communities across Canada also recognize November 6 as a day to show our appreciation for the compassionate work community social service workers do.

HSA endorses Lanzinger for BC Fed President

The Health Sciences Association of BC has joined the growing list of leading BC unions to endorse Irene Lanzinger for President of the BC Federation of Labour. "As secretary-treasurer of the BC Federation of Labour, Irene has demonstrated that she is a strong advocate for the services our members deliver in health care and social services," said HSA President Val Avery.

Your feedback is important. Note that this is one of many opportunities allowing members to share their thoughts about strategic planning for the next few years. If you are contacted by Viewpoints Research in the coming weeks, you are encouraged to participate in the telephone survey, which will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
