Last chance for Steward Training Sept. 18 - 20

There is still room available in HSA's Steward Training Level 1 workshop  beginning September 18.  Members who need this training should be aware that this is the only time this workshop is scheduled this fall. HSA members are invited to attend the official opening for the TELUS Tour for the Cure in Burnaby on Monday, September 18th at 11:10 a.m. at Metropolis at Metrotown. The TELUS Tour for the Cure is an informative and interactive exhibit that will travel to communities across British Columbia over the next eight months to promote the value and importance of breast health and mammography screening.  The Tour is part of a campaign by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to help women detect smaller tumors earlier.

B.C. Supreme Court dismisses petition; BMETs and CTs to remain HSA members

The B.C. Supreme Court today dismissed a petition by the Hospital Employees Union to overturn a decision of the Labour Relations Board to assign union membership of Biomedical Engineering Technologists from HEU to HSA.

Survivors' Parade of Hope to launch Run for the Cure September 9

You're invited to join the second annual province wide kick-off event for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure The Survivors' Parade of Hope will be held in seven cities across B.C. on September 9, 2006. The Survivors' Parade of Hope unites breast cancer survivors from around the province's communities on the same day -- demonstrating that there is hope for those newly diagnosed with the disease and that a future without breast cancer can be achieved.

BC Fed urges unions to withdraw Island Savings deposits to support striking workers

The B.C. Federation of Labour has urged its affiliated unions to follow the example of the United Steelworkers Local 1-80, which has withdrawn $500,000 of its funds from Island Savings Credit Union to show its support for members of Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union, Local 15 (COPE) on strike for a new contract.

Challenges Labour Minister to deal with inequality facing working families

The B.C. Federation of Labour has challenged Olga Illich, the newly-appointed Minister of Labour, to deal with the growing inequality facing working families says President Jim Sinclair. "Employment standards are the lowest in Canada and too many people are dying or are injured on the job," said Sinclair. "The new Minister has her work cut out for her. This government didn't need a new Labour Minister, it needs new policies to deal with the really difficult situation facing thousands of working people."
