Reminder: Monday, March 10, 2014 - Deadline for Scholarships and Bursaries available for HSA members and their families

(deadline extended from original date of FebRUARY 28) HSA is offering scholarships and bursaries to all members and their children.  Ten scholarships will be awarded for full-time studies, twenty bursaries for full-time studies and four bursaries for part-time studies.  Two aboriginal scholarships will be awarded to aboriginal students in BC.

BC's largest social justice film festival underway Feb. 28

The Just Film Festival brings the pursuit of justice to the big screen, featuring social justice and environmental documentaries that go to the heart of issues confronting communities here and around the planet. The focus of the festival is to motivate audiences to action by focusing on issues both local and global. It runs February 28 – March 2 at Langara College and is BC's largest social justice film festival. The festival is suopported by, among other groups, CoDevelopment Canada, a long time beneficiary of HSA's Committee on Equality and Social Action's solidarity fund.

From the beginning, employers have misunderstood and misinterpreted the terms of the negotiated agreement. They have attempted to reduce hours of work, eliminate earned days off and even layoff members. None of this is allowed by the agreement, which states that managers must work with staff in good faith to develop mutually-agreed schedules.

All HSA Registered Psychiatric Nurses are reminded that you will have until next Thursday, February 27, 2014 to file a grievance about lack of drug coverage. Decisions about grievance remedies will be made after February 27 once a full review of every individual grievance has been completed. To file a grievance on your behalf HSA requires that you complete the following form:

Community social service members ratify five year agreement

Agreement includes wage adjustments and pay increases Community social service workers have voted by 85 per cent in favour of ratifying a new collective agreement that includes wage adjustments and increases of up to 11.5 percent over five years. The new collective agreement will be in effect from April 1, 2014 until March 31, 2019. Community Living workers ratified the tentative agreement by 83 per cent. General Services ratified by 91 per cent, and Aboriginal Services ratified by 63 per cent.
