HSA members will soon be preparing for the 2012 HSA Convention, to be held April 19, 20, and 21, 2012 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver.

Conventions are the unions annual meeting where chapters from around the province determine the future direction of the union.  Policies, actions, constitutional amendments, structural changes are all discussed and debated at convention.

HSA steward elections

Elections will be held during the next 8 weeks to select members to fill the following HSA positions for the coming year:

1. Chief Steward
2. Assistant Chief Steward
3. General Stewards
4. Occupational Health & Safety Stewards and
5. Labour Council Delegates (for chapters that are, or wish to become, affiliated to their local labour council).

New deadline for Region 8 election is Friday, July 15

Due to the recent lock-out by Canada Post of Canadian Union of Postal Workers members HSA has extended the deadline for Region 8 members to return their mail-in ballots to elect a new Region 8 Director.  

With the new deadline, ballots must be received at the HSA office by 3:00 pm on Friday, July 15.

Ballot envelopes received by HSA will continue to be stored in a secure location until the new deadline, at which time all ballots received will be counted by the Elections Committee.

Election of Region 8 director ... Deadline Extended

Due to the current lock-out by Canada Post of Canadian Union of Postal Workers members, HSA is extending the deadline for Region 8 members to return their mail-in ballots to elect a new Region 8 Director.

Wednesday, June 29 was the original deadline for HSA to receive ballots.  Canada Post discontinued all regular mail delivery, and ceased accepting any new mail, in the middle of June.  Once mail service resumes, HSA will issue another bulletin to notify Region 8 members of the revised deadline for HSA to receive ballots.

Election underway for Region 8 Director

Four candidates have been nominated to run for Regional Director in Region 8.  A by-election was called following the resignation of Joan Magee as Region 8 Director.  The new Director will serve the remainder of Magees 2-year term, ending at the conclusion of HSAs 2012 convention.

The 4 candidates seeking election are:

HSA Board of Directors re-elects vice president, elects new secretary-treasurer

Val Avery -- a physiotherapist at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria -- has been re-elected by the HSA board of directors to serve as the unions vice-president. Avery is the unions regional director for Region 2.

The vice-president assumes the duties of the president at the presidents request or in the presidents absence and chairs the unions resolutions committee. This is her second term as vice-president.

HSA seeks Region 8 representative on unions board of directors

HSA is calling for nominations for the position of Regional Director for Region 8, following the resignation of Joan Magee. Magee has served on the unions board of directors since 2004.

The new Regional Director will serve the remainder of the two-year term, which ends at the conclusion of HSAs 2012 annual convention.

Reid Johnson re-elected president of HSA

Delegates to the 40th annual convention of the Health Sciences Association of BC have returned Reid Johnson as president of the 17,000-strong union of health science professionals working in hospitals and communities throughout BC.

Johnson has been President of the Health Sciences Association of BC since April 2007. The union represents more than 17,000 health science professionals in the public health care and community social services sectors in British Columbia.
