Defending public health care the focus for health science professionals union

Members of the Health Sciences Association, the health care union that represents health sciences professionals who deliver diagnosis, treatment and recovery in BCs hospitals and communities, is meeting this weekend at its 39th annual convention in Vancouver.

BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair told delegates Friday that it is important to fight for public health care, because the private interests that want to make money off of health care are threatening access to quality care to everybody who needs it.

HSA members elect Anita Bardal as Region 6 Director

HSA members in Region 6 have elected Anita Bardal, a medical radiation technologist at St. Pauls Hospital, as their representative on the unions Board of Directors.

The other candidates for election were James Lyons, a medical radiation technologist at Mount St. Joseph Hospital, and Mo Norton, a program support clerk at North Shore Community Health Services.

REMINDER: HSA Convention Registration Deadline

All HSA members are welcome to attend and speak at HSAs Annual Convention in Vancouver April 15-17, 2010, at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.   Only delegates, however, receive financial support to attend, and have the right to vote at convention.

For chapters with 49 or fewer members, the HSA chief steward is the sole delegate.  If the chief steward is not attending convention, an alternate should be identified.  Chapters with more than 49 members are entitled to one additional delegate for each additional 50 members or portion thereof.

Three candidates running for Regional Director in Region 6

During the next several weeks, HSA members in Region 6 will have an opportunity to elect a new representative on HSAs Board of Directors. Current Region 6 Director, Rachel Tutte, is stepping down after serving 2 terms.

Nominations for the position closed on February 1st with three members declaring their candidacy:
 

Heather Sapergia acclaimed as Region 10 Director

HSA members in Region 10 have once again elected Heather Sapergia as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. Heather was acclaimed after the February 1st deadline passed with no further nominations. 

Heather works as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at the University Hospital of Northern BC (formerly Prince George Regional Hospital) where she previously served as Chief Steward for several years.

Joan Magee acclaimed as Region 8 Director

HSA members in Region 8 have elected Joan Magee to a fourth term as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. Joan was acclaimed after the February 1st deadline passed with no further nominations.  

Brendan Shields acclaimed as Region 4 Director

HSA members in Region 4 have elected Brendan Shields as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. Brendan was acclaimed after the February 1st deadline passed with no further nominations.  

Brendan is a Music Therapist who has worked in a variety of health care settings in Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health.  He currently works, and serves as a Steward, at Richmond Hospital.

Val Avery acclaimed as Region 2 Director

HSA members in Region 2 have once again elected Val Avery as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. Val was acclaimed after the February 1st deadline passed with no further nominations.  

Val previously served as a Member-at-Large and for several years as Chief Steward at Victorias Royal Jubilee Hospital, where she works as a Physiotherapist.
