HSA and Fraser Health enter mediated negotiations

In early November, the Fraser Health Authority announced a series of cuts impacting HSA members including social workers, registered psychiatric nurses and youth care counsellors. HSA has responded by presenting a variety of options to Fraser Health intended to minimize the effect of displacements on HSA members.  To date HSA and Fraser Health have been unable to reach an agreement to create a labour adjustment plan.

Fall regional meetings to include elections for HSPBA Bargaining Proposal Conference in November

Health Sciences Association will hold a Bargaining Proposal Conference November 8-10, 2009 to prepare for bargaining of a new collective agreement for health science professionals. The current collective agreement expires March 31, 2010.

Elections for delegates to the Bargaining Proposal Conference will be held at regional meetings set for September and October 2009. The schedule of regional meetings follows.

Reid Johnson re-elected HSA president at 38th annual convention

More than 250 delegates to the 38th annual convention of the Health Sciences Association of BC have acclaimed Reid Johnson to lead the union as its president for another two-year term. Johnson was first elected president 2007.

Johnson, who holds a Masters of Social Work and worked at the Centre of Ability before his election in 2007, urged members to get active in their union and communities to make a difference.

NDP Leader Carole James to speak at Health Sciences Associations 38th annual convention

The Health Sciences Association of BC (HSA) will kick off its 38th annual convention Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, 900 West Georgia Street.

A Vision for Change is the theme of this years convention, as delegates consider a number of resolutions to set priorities for the unions future.

Carole James, Leader of the Opposition, will be the keynote speaker on Friday.

Bruce MacDonald acclaimed as Region 3 Director

HSA members in Region 3 have once again acclaimed Bruce MacDonald as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. He was acclaimed after the February 12th deadline passed with no further nominations. 
Bruce is a social worker at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. He has been a member of HSA since 2000. 

Bruce was first elected to the HSA Board of Directors in 2006 and currently sits on the unions Constitutional and Organizational Policy committee, Finance committee, and also serves as the unions Secretary-Treasurer.

Kimball Finigan acclaimed as Region 5 Director

HSA members in Region 5 have acclaimed Kimball Finigan, a radiation therapist at the Vancouver Centre of the BC Cancer Agency as their representative on the HSA board of directors.  He was acclaimed after the February 12th deadline passed with no further nominations.

Janice Morrison acclaimed as Region 9 Director

HSA members in Region 9 have acclaimed Janice Morrison, a physiotherapist at Kootenay Lake Hospital, as their representative on the HSA Board of Directors.

Since becoming an HSA member in 1990, Janice has been a Steward, Assistant Chief Steward, and Chief Steward at Kootenay Lake Hospital, as well as a Member-at-Large.  She previously sat on the Committee for Equality and Social Action, and the Political Action Committee, and currently serves on the Trial Committee.
