Marg Beddis acclaimed as Region 7 Director

HSA members in Region 7 have re-elected Marg Beddis, a dietitian at Surrey Memorial Hospital, as their representative on the HSA Board of Directors.

Since becoming an HSA member in 1991, Marg has been active as a Steward, Assistant Chief Steward and Chief Steward for Surrey Memorial Hospital.  She has also served as a Member-at-Large, and on several HSA committees, including Occupational Health and Safety, Political Action, Equality and Social Action, and Resolutions. Marg has also been an HSA Constituency Liaison in Surrey.

Suzanne Bennett acclaimed as Region 1 Director

HSA members in Region 1 have again acclaimed Suzanne Bennett as their representative to the HSA Board of Directors. She was acclaimed after the February 12th deadline passed with no further nominations. 
Suzanne has been the Region 1 Director since 2006.  She is the first HSA member from the community social services sector to serve on the board.

Suzanne is a youth addictions counsellor at the John Howard Society in Courtenay. She has been a member of HSA since 1998 and served as chief steward for five years. 

Membership survey now online

This year, as many of you will know, the Health Sciences Association of BC is developing a Strategic Plan.  We are seeking input from a wide range of people to inform this task, and some of you may have already participated in focus groups and other processes.  We are now inviting all members to participate in a short online survey.

Update on action taken on 2008 Convention resolutions

To help facilitate HSA chapter meetings dealing with resolutions for HSA's annual convention, HSA has posted a draft report of action taken on resolutions passed at the 2008 convention.

The draft "Business Arising" document is available on the HSA website at www.hsabc.org

"Business Arising" documents from previous conventions, as well as minutes from those conventions are also available on the HSA website under the "News" section, "Annual Reports."

HSA welcomes 120 new members from CML HealthCare

Employees at 10 Metro Vancouver locations of CML Healthcare, a private medical imaging and laboratory company with locations across Canada, have voted to join the Health Sciences Association of BC. The 120 employees join HSA members working at 12 CML facilities in Metro Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.

Nominations open for HSA President

HSAs 2009 Annual Convention will include an election for the position of President, a full-time position that carries a two-year term.

All members in good standing are eligible to run for President when nominated in writing by six members.  

Nominations for President are open until the final call for nominations takes place on the last day of convention Saturday, April 25, 2009.

Nominations open for Regional Director positions in Region 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9

This year, Regional Director elections will take place in Regions 1, 3, 5, 7, & 9.  All HSA members in these regions are encouraged to put their name forward for these important positions.

Directors meet, on average, every six weeks and take an active leadership role in representing the union.  They will receive wage replacement for the time they spend in official meetings at their own regular rate of pay.  Part-time and casual members are reimbursed as if they were at work during the meetings they attend.

...Therefore be it resolved

HSA members will soon be preparing for the 2009 HSA Convention, to be held April 23, 24, & 25, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

Conventions are where chapters from around the province determine the future direction of the union.  Policies, actions, constitutional amendments, structural changes are all discussed and debated at convention.

2009 HSA Convention to be held April 23-25 in Vancouver

Thenext HSA Annual Convention will take place April 23-25, 2008 at the FairmontHotel Vancouver in Vancouver.

AllHSA members are welcome to attend and speak at the convention.  However, only delegates have the right tovote.

Forchapters with 49 or fewer members, the HSA chief steward is the soledelegate.  If the chief steward is notattending convention, an alternate should be identified.  Chapters with more than 49 members areentitled to one additional delegate for each additional 50 members or portionthereof.
