Progress slow, but talks continue at community health bargaining table

The Community Bargaining Association (CBA) met again last week in Vancouver and exchanged and discussed proposals for three days with the Health Employers Association of British Columbia (HEABC).

The CBA tabled proposals related to health and welfare benefits including a proposal for a Short Term Illness and Injury Plan. The CBA also tabled proposals on job postings while the employer tabled their own proposals on the vehicle allowance and job postings.

The proposals represent all the issues to be tabled by the unions, with the exception of monetary issues.

Incorrect information about tax deduction for LTD premiums paid

A recent article in The Report contained incomplete information about tax deductions.
The potential for deducting for LTD premiums only applies if you are on an accepted LTD claim.
 
A member who is on an accepted LTD claim may be able to claim on their tax returns for LTD premiums they have previously paid. Whether they are eligible to do so, and how far back they can claim, is something HSA recommends you discuss with a financial or tax professional.

Community health negotiations slowed by employers lack of preparation

Unions in the Community Bargaining Association (CBA) are disappointed by the pace of talks so far with the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) after a second week of negotiations in Vancouver.
 
The CBA has tabled housekeeping proposals, language on bullying and harassment, live-in and overnight shifts as well as proposals to renew many of the existing Memorandum of Agreements without changes.  However, HEABC has yet to table any proposals or to respond to the majority of what the CBA has presented.

HSA negotiators head to the table for members in all sectors

Collective agreements covering the vast majority of HSA members working in health sciences and community social services expire on March 31, and HSAs negotiators have already begun work on the next agreements.

HEALTH SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS

Bargaining for the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association was scheduled to begin February 27.

HSA priorities for bargaining were set at a three-day bargaining proposal conference in November.

Workers in community health begin tabling bargaining proposals

Bargaining for British Columbias over 13,000 workers employed in community health services and support kicked off this week.  Talks commenced between the Community Bargaining Association (CBA) and the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) on January 23 with the exchange of opening remarks and the initial tabling of proposals. 

The CBA presented a summary of the priorities identified by health care workers and proposals related to harassment and bullying.  On Thursday the CBA also tabled proposals related to employer and union relations.

Community Health Services & Support: Members to begin negotiations

Representatives of HSAs Community Health Services & Support workers are set to begin talks with the employer January 23.

Delegates to a bargaining proposal meeting in October put wages and benefits at the top of the priority list. Members also directed their representatives to the bargaining table to seek improvements in vacation, anti-bullying language, job security, mileage rates and support for a transit subsidy, and professional development and education.

Training funds available for HSA members in the community health sector

If you are an HSA member who was laid off after January 28, 2002 due to re-tendering, contracting out, or bumping from a heaath care job in the community subsector,

-or-

If you are a current employee in a community subsector job and are interested in skills development, you may be eligible for reimbursement of training costs.

The retraining funds are available as a result of a settlement between health unions, health employers and the BC government related to a June, 2007 Supreme Court of Canada ruling on Bill 29.
